Amazon Meets Webvan

I Want It Today: Amazon gave in on the fight to collect sales tax.  Now that it has to pay, it may as well open stores directly in the states it serves.  The result could be much worse for local retailers than the sales tax disadvantage ever was.

Now that it has agreed to collect sales taxes, the company can legally set up warehouses right inside some of the largest metropolitan areas in the nation. Why would it want to do that? Because Amazon’s new goal is to get stuff to you immediately—as soon as a few hours after you hit Buy.

Remember the concept of “showrooming”?  This is not going to end well for the local book store.
