Microsoft to Offer Works for Free

Microsoft tries free office suite: Utterly fascinating in the crack that it opens in Microsoft’s business model. It’ll be interesting to see where this goes.

Free copies of some of Microsoft’s office software will soon be available.

The software giant said it would make ad-supported copies of the Works package available within “months”.

The programs will not run in a web browser but will be installed on a PC and have their cost offset by running adverts while in use.

I’m actually a big fan of Works. It’s wildly under-rated, and actually a completely sufficient suite for a lot of people.

Yes but is it too little too late -- meaning -- is the free release a belated response to Google Apps, Zoho, ThinkFree, Zimbra, etc ...?

I liked Works too, except for the fact that it introduces another proprietary format that, if I remember correctly, doesn't work in Word. Caused a few problems when I had to e-mail assignments for school....
